Secret Behind Motivation

Motivation is one of the keys in getting your vision executed by your team. If you motivate with the power of your vision alone, it doesn’t go far.  Take for example His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, his vision is clear but so is his passion. His passion was perfectly duplicated by  Mahra Ahmad Al Shehi, six years old Emirati girl who Shaikh Mohammed called the “queen of children”.

It is clear that to achieve something big and meaningful, you must have a vision, but you must also have passion of delivery. If you have these two, you are starting strong but when you add in compelling logic and valuable incentives – the chances of your team following you to the fulfilling end are high.

I am no His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, His Highness is creating a model city for the world to learn from and his team is following him to the end of the world. With me, what MBA books teach you and practical experience I gained, was getting all of us to work at only a certain level. My team was burning out, they were getting tired and I was feeling the pinch.

I had tried what was offered in the stacks of idealistic leadership books and it was almost short. Just few weeks away and my team including myself had faces longer than Burj Khalifa. Don’t take me wrong, things were coming along but we wanted more. Exhorting myself to follow His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum footsteps, imbued me with little more than a sense of guilt and inadequacy – those are big shoes to fill.

This is when I go to my secret weapon (my mother). Just telling her how much I love her and getting the duas from her bounces me right back. Without me saying anything, she always knows.  Before my conversation ended, she told me to read this :

“Ya Hayyu, ya Qayyumu, bi-rahmatika astaghithu”

You will not even imagine what happened the next day. It took my team’s motivation and focus towards the Fitness Expo Dubai to a whole new level. Every day after that, we would work hours we never worked before and the momentum started to take a whole new shape. I thought we uncovered the secret rule of blue ocean, stretching limits and pushing boundaries. You might think I woke up the next morning and gave everyone an incentive unheard of but I didn’t.

Research and my own experience in running companies suggests that external incentives—be they pep talks (I had given my share of it), wads of cash (bonus plan), or even the threat of consequences (you don’t do this, you are going home) — have limited impact.

The very next morning, we had a surprise visit from His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. And when he left, Azim who always leaves for home on the dot was the first to say, “guys, we need to do more”. I agreed immediately and collectively we decided that when he comes next, we need to be at much higher level. We had no clue when His Highness will come next but that one visit made the entire team behind the expo much better.

We worked day in day out and pushed our boundaries. There were days, we did not go home and there were other days we had meetings even at 4am. We decided to create a much tougher road map and Nov 02, 2016 was our exhibitors day.

The room was full of those who are coming to the Fitness Expo Dubai to provide valuable advice, products and services to the residents of Dubai (I am grateful for all of them coming) but the highlight was already had.

The morning of the exhibitors day, His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum dropped by again and once again, the entire team feels we need to do more. I wanted to show him the amazing 3D video created by our one person 3D video team, the “National Sports Day” push devised by our marketing team and the “Game of thrones” presentation by our design team but now everyone wants to do more.

HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s first visit gave us the second wind and his Nov 2nd visit gave us the third.

Michelle Lewin, born in Venezuela, migrated to ‘Venice of the Americas’ – Miami, from where she shot to fame across the globe.  This is what most people want, but luck goes to those who have worked against all odds to do something bigger. How did she become so famous?  Some people say, it was easy for her because she is gifted with “eye candy good looks” and research does show pretty women have it easier in life.

Self-fulfilling Prophecy

The report, ‘In School, Good Looks Help and Good Looks Hurt (But They Mostly Help)’ says that from high school onwards, people rate better-looking people higher in intelligence, personality, and potential for success — and this often creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The sociologists behind the study, at the University of Illinois at Chicago found women gain an eight per cent wage bonus for above-average looks and pay a four per cent wage penalty for below-average looks.

The key of study is the self-fulfilling prophecy, in Michelle’s case – although she is naturally gifted in the looks department, hard work, being open to opportunities and not giving up were the reason she shot to fame. As you read further you will get to know her more and will know the odds that were against her.

Michelle became a hit on social media as the ‘Queen of Fitness’ one fan at a time.  This organic growth from one fan to next soon reached a tipping point, where millions of girls looking for motivation to live a healthier life started to look up to  Michelle. “I’ve heard a lot about Dubai, like wow… I am very happy to visit the UAE and meet all the wonderful people there… and, hopefully, I will motivate some in the region to be more fit than they are right now,” said Michelle.

Why Is She So Famous

If you ask her, how come she is so famous, just like other great industry queens, she is modest about it.

“I can’t really explain my popularity because it’s like… the people are in need of motivation and see me as a motivator. The photos I post or the videos I post… the followers, they really appreciate them,” she added.

The early bird gets the feed is so true in her case. She works hard and she starts early.  There are many who are popular in social media. However, Michelle has managed to start a revolution with her morning selfies on Instagram.

“I found out that selfies is what the girls want to see. They could see that wow, this is the body that I want.

“Also the morning selfies, they are the boom because that’s a very natural picture There are no risk it’s photo-shopped. I just get up without make-up on with the hair like this, but it gets most likes.

Going Viral

They say, in order for something to go viral, it must have viral coefficient greater than one. Every person who sees it must tell others and the spread must be from one person to the next.  This is the normal process, marketing experts gain their insights about what is spreading and how fast. What if everything you post goes viral? What if those who consume your content are actually waiting for the next episode, what happens to the likes and spread then? Her husband explains it best.

Michelle’s husband, Jimmy Lewin, is also her manager and trainer. He also helps her manage her social media.
“I will post a picture since Michelle is in the shower. And then we look here at how the numbers are moving.
“One second, one like. One minute, 1,272 likes. Now 2 minutes, 20,142 likes, 3 minutes, 4,030 likes – this is how it goes”.
How many followers does Michelle actually have?
“All in all there are about 20 million followers,” Jimmy explains.

“At my last event, it was amazing. I was like wow… look at what I have achieved! All these people have come just to see me, to take a picture. They really make me feel special,” added Michelle.

Not All Is Fun

With fame comes the price. When fans want to be close to you and some want to take part of you with them, it makes things a bit difficult. Most fans are great and take home that selfie they take with her but there are others who :

“Sometimes, they get closer, they pull my hair. They grab me just for a photo. In Brazil they try to pull some hair off just to say ‘This is Michelle’s hair’,” she added

“I don’t sing. I’m no actor. They simply just know me from social media.

Just on Instagram, Michelle has more followers than Adam Levine from Maroon 5 – and she’s at the same level as athletes like Floyd Mayweather and Gareth Bale.

However, fame can also be dangerous
“There are quite a few people who have found out where we live I know that a lot of people who are trying to enter our place and that’s about the only thing I find kind of scary. But until now nothing bad has happened,” says Michelle.

Michelle’s Life

It is a fact mastered by the best, When life gets tough, the tough get going. It is true and tested by those before Michelle and many more who will come after. This timeless proverb is true in every sense of the word in Michelle’s case. When the going gets tough, some peoples’ lives simply fall apart. What is it exactly that separates Michelle who thrived even with the presence of adversity from those who don’t? Is it her genetics? Did she find a bowl of luck? Or was it her pure willpower?

Gandhi was the primary leader of India’s independence movement whose dad died at a young age but he initiated a form of disobedience that would influence the world. He turned hardship into a movement that would make him known as “the father of India”. Abraham Lincoln, one of the most recognized American presidents, failed in business, had a nervous breakdown, and was defeated eight times in elections before becoming president. Yes you read it right, he lost 8 times.

Gandhi and Lincoln’s examples are extreme, but they demonstrate the different routes these great people took when they were faced with major obstacles. Every year, in America more than 3 million children will witness domestic violence in their home from those who are supposed to protect them. On the flip side many other people have gone through hell and back and are moral, happy, and successful.

Michelle Saw Her Share Of Hardship

“When I was born, my parents separated. I grew up with my mother and my stepfather, but they too separated when I was 14 years old.

I started to work – it was only my mother and I. I became an adult very early, because I had to. When my mother and stepfather divorced, we were left with nothing – absolutely nothing. Only an apartment full of cockroaches. We didn’t have enough food to live on,” Michelle said.

“As a teenager, I was very complexed. I tried to cover myself. I was always wearing long pants. Always trying to find a way to cover my body,” she explained.
She got so skinny that she weighed only 39 kilos.
A very young Michelle decided to go with her mother to a gym. That day changed her life.

“I’ve been working out since I was 17… and now at 29 I can say that okay, I got the body I want.

When Michelle Met Jimmy

In 2008, Michelle met her husband Jimmy Lewin, who saw potential in the Venezuelan girl as a model. After getting married in 2010, the couple decided to try her luck at modeling.
“We went to Milan, London, and Barcelona – to agencies there. However, all of them said the same thing: You are very pretty, but way too short. They suggested we go to Miami,” Michelle said.
In Miami, she entered her first competition and really liked it. But she got last place.

Just like Abraham Lincoln lost eight times, yet never lost hope or the “will to fight” and finally became the president of United State of America. Michelle also was met with rejections, lived through them and finally became the “Queen of Fitness”.

“That was the spark she needed by getting last place. She turned to sports and her success soon led to the next step – triumphing the social network.

Michelle’s Secret

Ok you read this far and deserve to know her secret, which you can use to live a healthier life.

“Michelle works out in the morning – does 45 minutes of cardio. In the evenings, she trains with weights. I have to force her to take a break,” says Jimmy.

“The secret to her shape is not only the physical activity – it’s all about the nutrition.
“Before, I was training a lot harder, but I ate badly. Today, I work out lighter, but I eat very healthy,” Michelle adds.
I need to follow certain rules. And, what are the rules?
Follow a strict and healthy diet – very balanced.
One day a week, I eat whenever I want.

Knowing the opposition is important, but so is knowing your own game. These are the things you would find if you have a first go at trying to find out what drove Mike to win but if you really pay attention, you will see something different.

From a Farm Boy To Thor to 4 time Mr. (Natural) Universe titles

From a farm boy to Titan, Mike has done more with his life than most will, with the life of their entire families. Mike was born to compete and being the youngest of the 9 siblings made him work for every inch he got. It was his competitive nature and amazing forward looking attitude that got him to where he is today. He got the smack-downs on a daily basis from his four older brothers and sisters.

Competing with his siblings and others around Kirkland where he grew up, gave him his first taste of wanting to be number one. This “survival of the fittest’ made him tough but the genetics didn’t work against him either, his dad was a football player, and a bodybuilder.

He began bodybuilding at age 7 in emulation of his father and older brothers – who never took it easy on him and used him as a punching bag. He was relentless from day one and his drive to win got him into bodybuilding, power lifting, and martial arts when he was only 13 years old. He is a living proof of of one of the biggest myth about strength training:

The most common question brought up when talking about children lifting weights is the possibility of stunted growth. Simply put, it is a myth that proper strength training can stunt the growth of a child. There is no scientific evidence to support that claim. Just so you know Mike is now 6 ft 3 inches.

He has been a fighter all his life, both in and out of the spotlight. His initially found fame came from the Original American Gladiators where his show-name was “Thor”. Not the arrogant God Thor of Asgard to live amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders. Mike was the Original real life “Thor” who became the role model for everyone who wants to achieve error free perfect body.

It was Mike’s charisma and commitment to bodybuilding, which saw him transcend his real-life super hero image to become one of the most famous bodybuilder on the planet. He has appeared as the cover model on more than 500 issues of various fitness, martial arts and bodybuilding magazines. He is a full package, the height, body of a super hero and looks to die for, which got him on the covers of more than 100 romance novels also. Imagine the readers of those novels, imagine what they think of his eye candy body and face molded by the angels themselves. One fan said it best :

Mike O’Hearn was born Patrick Michael “Mike” O’Hearn in Kirkland, Washington, USA.

His father was a football player, and a bodybuilder, and his mother was an artist. When he was a child he never sat still. He walked and talked and did everything before his time and he loved martial arts, which Everybody in his family was required to do. Dubai is full of Mavens

It is a trend setter, those who come to  visit and those who are living in Dubai all have influence in their homelands.  When they go back to their country to visit, whatever product they take back, has a chance of gaining traction.  They act as the Mavens, which is explained in Malcolm Gladwell debut book “The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference”

Mavens are “information specialists”, or “people we rely upon to connect us with new information”. They accumulate knowledge, especially about the marketplace, and know how to share it with others. Gladwell cites Mark Alpert as a prototypical Maven who is “almost pathologically helpful”, further adding, “he can’t help himself”. In this vein, Alpert himself concedes, “A Maven is someone who wants to solve other people’s problems, generally by solving his own”. According to Gladwell, Mavens start “word-of-mouth epidemics” due to their knowledge, social skills, and ability to communicate. As Malcolm Gladwell states, “Mavens are really information brokers, sharing and trading what they know”.

The health authorities in Dubai do an excellent job in protecting people living in Dubai and do what it takes to make sure supplements or other health products entering the Dubai market go through proper process. The more he thought about it, the stronger his passion grew. Even the name itself is the living proof of the concept being a product of Love. Before we get to why people quit, here is a story:

In 1978, there was a kid in the gym, along with 50 or so of his classmates, trying out for his local high school team. There were 15 roster spots and 50 kids. Naturally 35 kids were to be cut. At the end of tryouts when the list was posted on the wall, this 5’10” kid did not make the cut.

One of the reasons he didn’t make it was his height. “It was embarrassing not making the team,” he said later. What he did after he went home was inline with what normal people do. He went home, locked himself in his room and cried.

After the feeling sorry part ended, he picked himself up and turned the cut into motivation. This is what he said, “whenever I was working out and got tired and figured I ought to stop, I’d close my eyes and see that list in the locker room without my name on it,”. “That usually got me going again”.

The dedication got him to work hard but it was the purpose that got him to become the star of the junior varsity team in his sophomore year. He put up multiple 40-point games and attracted crowds that were unprecedented for a JV affair.

Those who have a well defined purpose win against all odds and even the forces in the universe start to come together in helping them.  The summer leading into his junior year he began to morph. In 1979 he grew 4 inches and worked out constantly. That year he made the varsity squad and instantly became his high school’s best player, averaging more than 20 points a game.

Despite having secured his spot on the team, his work ethic didn’t drop off. His senior year he averaged a triple-double and led Laney High to a 19-4 record. He capped off his high school career in style, being named a McDonald’s All-American. He wasn’t yet His Airness, but he was well on his way.

It might come as a shock, but the man who became what many would call the best basketball player of all time didn’t make his high school basketball team, he was Michael Jordan. But not making the list became his fuel and his purpose was to become the best basketball player in the world.

Why Dubai is the Perfect Location for the World’s Largest Fitness Expo

Even when I got the idea for the first time, I had no doubt about where the world’s largest fitness expo should be held. Dubai is just the perfect venue for an event of this scale,” says Mr. Arif Mirza, the man behind the upcoming Fitness Expo Dubai 2016.

When Mr. Arif first invited me for a workout session at the Burj Khalifa, where he resides, I was a little surprised that he wanted to organize a fitness expo in Dubai. But over the course of our discussion, Mr. Arif spoke at length about his vision and the determination I know him to have, I knew he was going to make something happen.

Now, just over a year later, Mr. Arif has come a long way, traveling between different fitness events and expos around the world and connecting with some of the top names in the industry. Now more than ever, he seems determined to see his plan to the end, and once again I was left to wonder why Dubai, but then, it all makes sense.

From his apartment at the Burj Khalifa, Mr. Arif looks upon the transformation Dubai has undergone. The city has truly risen beyond expectations and has consistently challenged the whole world to do better.

Whether it is the world’s biggest mall, the world’s richest race or the world’s tallest building – Dubai is synonymous with the best of the best, and if there is an event that truly stands above the rest, Dubai is well equipped to host it.

For instance, the location chosen by Mr. Arif, the Dubai International Marine Club is one of the region’s premier sports venue and is fully equipped to host a fitness expo on the scale Fitness Expo Dubai 2016 is aiming for.

Similarly, following Mr. Arif’s successful personal training venture, Trainer.ae, he has been able to garner local support and make connections in the UAE’s own health and fitness industry. In fact, it was his time in this venture that he realized that the UAE, and more specifically Dubai, were primed for such an event.

Holding an international expo in Dubai also makes sense because of the city’s central location and ease of access in terms of travel from around the world. Given how many people Mr. Arif is confident about pulling in, the location for the venue needed to be both accessible and convenient, yet a place that would leave an indelible mark on the visitors.

Mr. Arif is has also been in talks with the local government bodies, which are more than keen to support such initiatives which can contribute towards a healthier future for the people of Dubai.
